Don’t Let the Electrician Overcharge You for Wire

Setting up a home charging station? One of the biggest hidden costs is the thick copper electrical cabling. The wire has to run from your main distribution board all the way to your parking spot. Here’s the annoying part: Electricians in India always measure distance in feet, but high-quality industrial wire is sold in coils of meters.

If you don’t know how to convert feet to meter and meter to feet, you will end up buying too much wire (wasting money) or too little (causing ugly splices). Let’s fix that.

The Only Number You Need to Remember: 3.281

1. Converting Feet to Meter

To convert your measurement from feet into meters, simply divide the number of feet by 3.281.

  • Example: You measure your parking spot to be 50 feet away from the meter.
  • Math: 50 ÷ 3.281 = 15.24 meters. (So, you buy a 16-meter cable).

2. Converting Meter to Feet

If you bought a standard 20-meter coil of wire and want to know how far it will reach in feet, multiply the meters by 3.281.

  • Example: You have 20 meters of wire.
  • Math: 20 × 3.281 = 65.62 feet.

Why This Precision is Critical (The Voltage Drop Rule)

Why do I care so much about this? Because of voltage drop. If the distance between your EV charger and the meter is over 15 meters (about 50 feet), the electrical resistance in the wire increases. If your electrician uses a standard thin wire for a long distance, it will overheat and could cause a fire.

If your calculation proves the distance is greater than 15 meters, demand that your electrician uses a thicker gauge wire (6 sq.mm or 10 sq.mm) to ensure your car charges safely overnight.
