How to Get a Temporary Power Connection for Events

How to Get a Temporary Power Connection for Events

Powering Your Mega Event Safely

Hosting a large-scale wedding, a massive trade exhibition, or a religious festival (like Navratri or Ganesh Utsav) in Mumbai requires an enormous amount of electricity for high-intensity lighting, sound systems, and air conditioning. Relying on silent diesel generators is expensive and environmentally restricted. The most reliable and legal method is to apply for a ‘Temporary Event Connection’ from your local utility provider (BEST, Adani, or Tata Power).

The Application Timeline and Requirements

Unlike permanent connections, temporary event meters must be processed rapidly, but utilities still demand strict safety compliance.

  • Lead Time: You must apply at least 7 to 10 days before the event setup begins. Last-minute applications are often rejected due to lack of time for site inspection.
  • Police & Fire NOCs: For large public gatherings, utilities require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the local Police Station and the Fire Brigade ensuring crowd safety measures are in place.
  • Ground/Venue Permission: An official allotment letter or permission slip from the BMC, MMRDA, or private ground owner allowing the event to take place.
  • Licensed Electrical Contractor Report: This is the most critical document. A licensed contractor must certify that all temporary wiring, halogen lights, and stage equipment are properly earthed and protected by industrial-grade RCCBs to prevent electrocution in open grounds.

Billing and Security Deposits

Temporary event connections operate on a strictly prepaid or high-deposit model. Because the utility sets up cables and meters for just a few days, they charge a premium commercial tariff. Furthermore, you must deposit an estimated usage amount upfront. Once the event concludes and the meter is uninstalled, the actual consumption is deducted, and the remaining balance is refunded to your bank account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just take an extension wire from the nearest building?

Absolutely not. That is considered ‘power theft’ and unauthorized extension of load. If caught, the utility will cut power to the main building and file an FIR against the event organizers.

How is the load for an event calculated?

Your licensed electrical contractor will sum up the wattage of all halogen lights, speakers, fans, and ACs to calculate the total requested kW load.

Does the utility provide the cables to the stage?

No. The utility only brings power up to the temporary meter board at the edge of the ground. The internal wiring from the meter to the stage is the organizer’s responsibility.

What happens if it rains during an open-ground event?

This is why RCCBs are mandatory. If water hits exposed wiring, the RCCB will instantly trip the power, preventing fatal electrocution.

How long does the deposit refund take?

After surrendering the temporary meter, the final bill is generated, and the refund is typically processed within 15 to 30 days via NEFT.
