How to Apply for Electricity Load Enhancement (Adani/Tata)

How to Apply for Electricity Load Enhancement (Adani/Tata)

Why Load Enhancement is Not Optional

When you purchase a new property in Mumbai, the utility company sanctions a specific electrical load based on the original builder’s application (often just 1 kW to 3 kW for a standard apartment). If you add multiple air conditioners, a heavy-duty geyser, or an EV charger, your actual consumption will quickly surpass this sanctioned limit. Continuing to draw excess power without informing the utility is illegal and triggers heavy ‘Maximum Demand’ penalties on your monthly bill, and can lead to the confiscation of your meter due to fire hazards.

The Document Checklist

To formally request a load extension from Tata Power or Adani Electricity, you must prepare the following dossier:

  • Latest Paid Bill: A copy of your most recent electricity bill showing zero outstanding arrears.
  • Test Report (Crucial): A Form ‘A’ test report signed and stamped by a Government Licensed Electrical Contractor. This certifies that your internal wiring has been upgraded (using thicker copper gauge) to safely handle the new requested load.
  • Proof of Ownership/Occupancy: Sale Deed, Rent Agreement, or Society Share Certificate.
  • Society NOC: If the load enhancement requires upgrading the main service cable from the society’s meter room to your apartment, you must submit an NOC from the housing society committee.

The 4-Step Application Workflow

  1. Online Submission: Visit the Adani or Tata Power consumer portal, log in, and select ‘Load Enhancement/Reduction’. Fill out the required kW and upload the documents.
  2. Feasibility Check: The utility engineers will check if the distribution transformer feeding your building has the spare capacity for your request.
  3. Site Inspection: A vigilance officer will inspect your meter cabin to ensure the physical cables can handle the new load. If your current single-phase meter is maxed out (above 7.5 kW), they will mandate a three-phase upgrade.
  4. Payment of SLC: If approved, you will receive a demand note for the differential Security Deposit and Service Line Charges (SLC). Pay this online, and the backend system will update your sanctioned load within 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I don’t apply for load enhancement?

Your meter will continually record ‘Maximum Demand’ violations. The utility will levy heavy penalty charges per kW exceeded, and eventually, the service cable may melt, causing a fire.

Does load enhancement mean my per-unit rate increases?

No. The per-unit energy charge depends on your total unit consumption (slab rate), not your sanctioned load. However, the fixed monthly demand charge will increase slightly.

Will the utility company change my wiring?

No. The utility is only responsible for the infrastructure up to the meter. The wiring from the meter to your house is your responsibility and must be upgraded by your private licensed electrician.

How long does the approval process take?

If the local transformer has capacity and your documents are perfect, the approval and load update take about 7 to 10 working days.

Can a tenant apply for load enhancement?

Yes, but they must submit a specific NOC from the property owner explicitly permitting the load extension and any associated three-phase meter changes.

Need a Test Report for Load Extension?

We are Government Licensed Contractors. We assess your load, upgrade your cables, and issue the mandatory Test Report for Adani and Tata Power.
