Transforming Rooftops into Power Plants
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a game-changer for homeowners in Maharashtra. Designed to provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month, this central government scheme offers massive capital subsidies for installing rooftop solar panels. However, navigating the national portal, selecting empanelled vendors, and waiting for DISCOM approvals requires patience and an understanding of the exact bureaucratic workflow.
Subsidy Structure Breakdown
The subsidy is calculated based on the capacity (in kW) of the installed system, not the total cost of installation.
- 1 kW System: Subsidy of ₹30,000.
- 2 kW System: Subsidy of ₹60,000.
- 3 kW to 10 kW System: Maximum fixed subsidy capped at ₹78,000.
Note: If you install a 5kW system, you will still only receive the maximum cap of ₹78,000. Group housing societies can avail up to ₹36,000 per kW for common facilities (like lifts and water pumps), capped at 500 kW capacity.
The 5-Step Application Process
- National Portal Registration: Register on the PM Surya Ghar portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) using your state, electricity distribution company (e.g., MSEDCL, Adani, Tata Power), and consumer number.
- Apply for Rooftop Solar: Fill out the digital application form. The local DISCOM will review the technical feasibility (whether the local transformer can handle the backfeed).
- Vendor Selection: Once feasibility is approved, you MUST select a registered vendor from the portal’s authorized list to execute the installation.
- Net Meter Installation: After the vendor installs the panels and submits the work completion report, the DISCOM will visit for inspection and install the bidirectional net meter.
- Subsidy Disbursal: Post commissioning, the portal generates a commissioning certificate. Submit your bank details, and the subsidy is credited directly to your account within 30 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install the solar panels myself to get the subsidy?
No. To avail the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, the installation must be carried out exclusively by a vendor empanelled with the state DISCOM.
Do I need a separate meter for solar?
Yes. The utility company will replace your standard meter with a bidirectional ‘Net Meter’ that records both the electricity you import from the grid and the excess solar power you export.
Is this scheme applicable for commercial shops?
No. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is strictly for residential consumers and residential welfare associations (RWAs).
What if my DISCOM rejects the feasibility?
Rejections usually happen if the local distribution transformer is overloaded. You will have to wait until the utility upgrades the neighborhood infrastructure.
Do I have to pay the vendor the full amount?
Yes. You pay the vendor the total negotiated cost of installation. The government then reimburses the subsidy amount directly into your bank account.
